Tour the Plains Conservation Center
Introduction to Prairie Ecology and Cultural History
Available spots
Service Description
Join us to travel back in time. We will take a sunset wagon tour of the short grass Colorado prairie at the 1,100 acre Plains Conservation Center in Aurora. Bring your cameras, binoculars and curiosity. You will learn about the dominant and native plants in the area, as well as the birds and mammals, and how all have adapted to the ecology of the Great Plains. Do not be surprised to see pronghorns, coyotes, prairie dogs and other fauna native to the area. Our guide will show and explain some of the restoration work and research projects being done at the Plains Conservation Center. Time will also be provided to visit the tepee camp and discuss the history of the indigenous people of Colorado, as well as visit a re-creation of a sod village of the 1880's. Fendi Despres, our expedition guide, is a Natural Resource Specialist for the City of Aurora Open Space and Forestry. Wagon seats 30. Photo courtesy of Brad Stratton.
