This class focuses on Ukrainian history before the current war with Russia. Participants will be introduced to Ukraine's origins as well as its political and cultural development. This includes the powerful Kievan Rus', its Viking rules, strong ties with Byzantium and the glorious days of Zaporizhzhya Sich- the center of the Cossack Army. Participants will also meet the controversial Hetmans that once ruled over the Cossacks , threw the most daring Polish regiments into a panic, and outsmarted the craftiest Crimean-Tartar raiders. Other highlights include: Roxolana who married Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and conquered Turkish hearts The now-reviled Catherine the Great who ruled over the Empire with wisdom and foresight Ukraine's cultural resistance to the oppression of the Russian Empire Presenter Nataliya Pankeyeva is a Ukrainian immigrant who moved to the United States in 1999 to work for singer-songwriter Hank Williams Jr. She earned a MA in English from Ukraine prior to leaving and has worked as and ESL specialist in the Cherry Creek School District since 2009. She is a mother of two. Her mother lives in Ukraine.
